1.7 Everyday Trifles

Mark’s pov.

“Hello 7061!” Advisor 223 answered my call.

“Hello, Advisor 223! I’m sorry to bother you again so soon. But I need your advise urgently!”

“What happened to you?! Did they use you for an experiment?” He held back his laugh when he saw my blue neck.

“You can say that. They had a giant bucket of blue dye set up in the school yard and had students jump inside. I came out like this.” I showed him my arms and hands.

“What is this about? I’ve never heard of such a thing.” He scratched his head.

“It’s something they do on the first day of school at Felix Martin… apparently, it has something to do with the school spirit.” I frowned. “Do you have any advice on how to get this stuff off?”

“Did you use the cleaning gel I packed for you?”

“Yes, at least 10 times, but there’s no improvement! The upper year students said it’s going to take a couple of weeks for the color to fade.”

“Hahahaha! That means you’re going to be blue for two weeks!” He let out a loud laugh.

“Advisor 223, I’m in a dire situation here. Could you please help?”

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Haha…” He finally got a hold of himself. “Hold on a second. Let me see if there’s anything I can do for you.” He disappeared for a few seconds. “From my most recent research, the type of dyes used on the skin will fade over time as your skin cells shed. Studies show that it’s going to lighten significantly after one week and will be unnoticeable after two weeks.”

“Is there anything that could help it go away faster?”

“I’m sorry, 7061.” He shook his head. “I’m afraid you’ll have to wait. Our cleaning gel was not developed for removing this type of chemicals.”

“I understand.” I took a deep breath to let the thought of having blue skin for two weeks sink in. “I also wanted to ask you about the cleaning gel. I only found one 20 ml bottle in my bag…” A bottle like that would last about a month for washing myself and my clothes.

“Right, I forgot to tell you. That’s all I had left when I packed for you. I need to go shopping soon.” He grinned.

“What should I do when I run out then?” Now that I’ve already used up a quarter of the bottle for this blue dye. It won’t even last for a month.

“My advice for you is to use it sparingly. And adapt to the way of life at your mission field as quickly as possible.” He winked.

“You mean that I should start living like the people here right away? Like taking a shower under a stream of water and washing my clothes with bulky machines?”

“Hahaha! That’s exactly what I’m trying to say!” He looked content. “Since you’ll be staying for a while, it would be better to get started sooner rather than later. Trust me, once you get used to doing things their way, it won’t be a hassle at all.”

“Yes, sir.” I had no choice but to obey, since his advice are my commands.

“Waah! This so cold!” I turned the knob of the shower. “Ahhh! Now that burns!” It took a while for me to figure out how to adjust the temperature. And the soap is like water, but slipper. A simple cleaning which normally takes a few seconds took me a good half hour under the shower. And the dryer, it was such a catastrophe that I don’t even want to talk about it.

“Hi, cutie!” A female voice came from behind my ear. I was still recovering from the shock of my first shower that I didn’t hear anyone coming at all.

“Hello.” I tilted my head to find two girls standing next to me. They wore tiny pieces of clothing which exposed the skin of their female body parts. I cover my private parts with one hand and proceeded to open the door to my room with the other.

“Are you new here? We haven’t seen you around.” The girl with long brown hair propped one arm on the door frame and glanced at me from head to toe.

“Yes, ma’am.” I had no intentions of making conversations with them, so I kept my eyes on the door knob.

“Are you a first year then? Where are you from?” She continued in a strange voice and stuck out her chest in front of me.

“Uh…if you would excuse me… I…”

“Oh, don’t leave just yet! We haven’t even gotten a good look at you!” She ran a finger slowly on my arm. The sensation sent a shiver down my spine.

“Emery is right. What’s the rush?” The other girl touched me on my back. She flicked her long wavy blonde hair and sent out a pungent aroma.

“Well, um…” I gently moved the arm that was covering the door frame out of the way. “I have to go.” I flung the door open and backed into it.

“Wait! You haven’t told us your name yet!” The brunette girl placed her fingers on the inside of the door frame to prevent me from closing the door all the way.

“Um…my name. I’ll tell you later if you let me close the door.” As soon as I closed the door, I slipped on a pair of underwear. What kind of girls are they? I’ve been informed that this is a boy’s dorm, why are there women walking around in undergarments?

“Hey, cutie! Did you forget about us?” There was a gentle knock on the door after a few seconds. “We’re still here.”

“Uh, I’m going to bed now. If you have any questions, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait till tomorrow.” I tried to find a nice way to ask them to leave.

“You’re going to bed already?”

“Yes, it’s been a long day. I need to get some rest.” I laid down on my bed and pulled the cover over my body.

“It’s only 7:30. No one goes to bed this early! Come on, let’s go to a party together!” The same girl continued. “There’s a nice pub down the street.”

“Not today. Good night!”

“Why don’t you come to a party with us tomorrow then?” They giggled behind the door. I didn’t answer them this time. From my understanding, ‘party’ was an event where people drink and dance with loud music. I turned on my device to see through the door and hear their conversation.

“Can’t you see that he’s not interested?” The brunette girl said to the blonde. “There are plenty of hot guys in this dorm.”

“I haven’t seen any hot guys all day!” The blonde girl answered. “Didn’t you see his ass? Oh, my god! It’s so f**** hot! I’ve never seen a guy confident enough to walk around the dorm naked!”

“He does have a nice ass, but you should’ve seen his you know what! It’s a major turn on!”

“What? You saw?!”

“Oh, too bad you didn’t get a good look! Next time you should stand in front of him.”

“Look who’s talking? You claimed that spot first!”

“Hey, don’t try to put all the blame on me.” The brunette girl looped placed one hand on her friend’s shoulder. “Let’s go to the party! Maybe we’ll have better luck tonight.”

“What if we don’t meet anyone nearly as hot?” The blonde was hesitant to leave.

“Then we can totally come back tomorrow. We know where he lives now.”

“Oh, my God! You’re so smart! We don’t want to miss the party! Room 305! Muah!” The blonde girl blew a kiss at my door. Yikes! What do they want exactly? I hope they never come back! I’ll have to plan better for my next shower.

The alarm on my device sounded at 6:00 am the next morning. It must’ve been set by Advisor 223. I took advantage of the time I had before classes and went for a jog in the school field. I had never so good jogging back home before. On my way back to my dorm room, I saw a guy coming out of the showers with a towel wrapped around his waist. From then on, I always wrapped a towel around my waist coming out of the showers.

I arrived at the cafeteria as soon as it opened, in the hopes that no one will notice my blunders. However, the guy I saw coming out of the showers had already arrived. Great! I’ll just do everything he does. He washed his hands at the sink area before proceeding to the food counters. I picked up the same tray as he did and placed an empty bowl on it. He filled up his bowl with yellow flakes and poured milk on it. Then placed a couple of flattened eggs and two slices of bread on his plate. I did the same.

I sat at a table not far from him and copied how he ate his food. The yellow flakes were crunchy and sweet, and tasted superb with the milk. The flattened eggs were soft and mushy. And when I cut them in half, the inside of the yoke oozed out onto the plate. I used a slice of bread to pick up the thick yellow liquid. It tasted rather interesting, in a good way…

“Good morning, 7061.” Advisor 223’s face appeared as a hologram.

“Hello, Advisor 223.” I forced a smile on my face despite the pain in my stomach.

“Do you have something new to report to me?” he asked.

“I figured out how to take showers in the dorms.”

“That’s a commendable achievement.” He smiled. “You’ll learn to enjoy many things on your mission. Just give it some time.”

“Ye…yes, sir.” I agreed.

“Do you have anything else to report?” He knew I wouldn’t have called for such a minor thing.

“I’m sorry, but I think I need your help again.” My face must’ve looked sour from the pain. “My stomach started to hurt after eating breakfast this morning.”

“You had breakfast? What did you eat?” He didn’t sound worried.

“Two eggs, two slices of bread and flakes of cereal with milk.” I sent him a photo of my breakfast.

“Hmm. These are typical foods eaten for breakfast for that time period. Most likely, your stomach is taking some time to adjust to digesting solid food.” He answered. “If the pain doesn’t go away after a few hours, then you can see a doctor. He’ll be able to help you.”

“Where can I find a doctor?” I’ve read about physicians who prescribe medication to people when they don’t feel well. It sounds like magic to me.

“You can find them in clinics and doctor’s offices. Hold on a sec.” He checked on his database. “Ah, there is a clinic at your University. You can go there. I’ve just sent you the information.”

“What should I say when I see him?”

“Basically, what you told me…except don’t mention the fact that you have been eating tablets as meals all your life. Let me know if you need anything else.”

“Thank you, Advisor 223.”

The University’s clinic even had a website with all the information I need. Should I go for a visit now? It’s going to be difficult to concentrate in class with this kind of pain. Oh, I feel something coming. I dashed to the toilet and came out a brand-new person.
